This is a great place to see art exhibitions and events.
On Thursday evening the gallery is open late. You can go and hear people read their poetry or listen to live music.
You can check their website to find out what is on.
Youth or community groups can book workshops or hear a talk about the gallery. You can have as many as 15 people in your group.

The gallery can give private tours for people with visual impairments.
There is a shop which sells books about art and a café which has good food.
It is a good idea to phone and book a table if you want to go with a big group and eat on a Thursday evening.
The Whitechapel hires out rooms for private functions.

Cost or concessions

It's free to visit the Whitechapel Gallery.
The gallery always has one show a year that you have to pay to see.
But you don't need to pay if you go on a Thursday evening from 6.00pm to 9.00pm.
A bowl of soup with bread and cup of tea costs about £4.00. There are concessions for people with disabilities so ask about cheaper prices.

Parking
There is 1 accessible parking space in front of the gallery. You can park there for 3 hours.
The nearest public car park is in Spreadeagle Yard, just off Whitechapel High Street. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday it opens at 7.00am and closes at 7.00pm.
On Saturday the car park is closed.
On Sunday it opens at 8.30am and closes at 2.30pm.

inside
The minimum doorway width is 850mm wide.
There are 3 levels in the Whitechapel Art gallery.
There is a service lift, it has very wide doors, you need to ask a member of staff to use the lift. The galleries are fully accessible via lift.

There is an accessible toilet with hand rails - it is unisex.
The staff can show you where it is.
The doorway is 850mm.
There is a baby change in the toilet that is not adapted.

Support
The Whitechapel gallery has large print information about the art exhibits and gallery access at reception.
They have also made audio tapes which the Royal National Institute for the Blind can send out.
If you have a visual impairment you can have a tour of the gallery and art exhibits with a staff member who is trained in visual description. You can book it in before you go or on the day.
On some Sundays there are talks in British Sign Language (BSL) or Sign Supported English (SSE). These talks are called Sunday Sightlines. You can find out about them on their website, www.whitechapel.org
The staff were really friendly and helpful on our visit.
